Stanley Kubrick Archive

Working in collaboration with photographer Natasha Caruana and the Stanley Kubrick Archive, Eelyn Lee designed and delivered a 12-week process whereby Year 10 students at Brampton Manor Academy learnt skills in film and photography to make their own video installation.

Eelyn Lee says about the project,

"... Brampton Manor is situated next to the Beckton Gasworks where Stanley Kubrick filmed Full Metal Jacket so from the outset the project had a lot of resonance with Kubrick even though the students were too young to watch most of his films! At the time of the project there was an old caretaker's house on the school grounds that was due to be demolished but we managed to gain access to it for the project. Natasha and I were both excited about drawing a parallel between the ghost caretaker in The Shining and the idea of past caretakers who had once lived on the school grounds.

We asked students to imagine these past caretakers and to write letters to them in the voice of a new caretaker - echoing the Jack Nicholson character in The Shining. In the film, when Jack Nicholson meets the ghost caretaker in the bathroom the entire room is painted red. We explored the many meanings of the colour red and decided to paint the derelict house red as part of the project.

I'm very proud of this project. It was challenging working within the timetable as we only saw the students once a week for an hour and a half. We did however manage to get them out to the Stanley Kubrick Archive at LCC [London College of Communications] and to Tate Modern to see some film installations ..." Eelyn Lee
